Saturday marked the first day of the 2018-2019 season, the year I knew I would finally start paying close attention to the men’s fashion season. In addition to my incessant reading of the yearly fashion collections catalog, my evening rounds involve catching the namesake runway shows from New York, London, Milan, Paris, or elsewhere.

Designer to the stars Virgil Abloh runs two namesake lines. In addition to Off-White, his line his shows hip hop-inspired collections (he named the name off the band A$AP Rocky and his fame). I’ve seen some of Abloh’s shows — especially Off-White — more than once. These are collections that’s experimental, experimental, including complicated inventions on ideas of fashion design. These collections have captivated the attention of fashion forward bloggers, the mainstream fashion audience, and even cool kids like myself. He is making history, challenging fashion too.

This season, he did something I thought was outside of his box.

The season opened with Runaway by Kanye West. Abloh made the announcement that the show he would be directing would be curated by A$AP Rocky. I wondered how this would work. Is Abloh re-categorizing Kanye West or mocking the way that West approaches fashion? Would it be grandiose, avant-garde or clever? Would Runaway be timely, this year or simply timeless?

All I know for sure is that the actual Runaway collection was everything it needed to be. Everything from the embroidery to the adornments to the colors was different and innovative.
