Bachelor in Paradise review: are Josh Murray's shades of dark secrets OK?

Sunday evening felt like a huge sigh of relief for everyone who has been following the “On the Clock” hype from Bachelor in Paradise. Reality Steve, who has a well-earned reputation for correctly predicting BIP outcomes, has been in charge of scouring some preliminary photos of the 30-year-old professional football player Colton Underwood before he comes to Paradise in the hopes of unearthing clues about whether he is going to be a winner or a loser.

This has been complicated because we don’t really know what his backstory is or what he hopes to bring to the table. When he saw the preliminary photos he looked confused, his “eyes lit up,” according to Steve, and he was all about the “speed dating.” But ultimately, Steve was sticking to his guns: at this point in the game Colton was going to come out and reveal he is gay. “If you really thought things could be going better and better,” Steve said to Colton, “what you’re doing now is to me pretty much writing your obituary.”

Thankfully, the first episode of the show did not completely let down fans of true-blue drama. Rather, it opted to give us a look at the still-living Josh Murray, who has found himself in hot water this summer thanks to allegations that he cheated on his now ex-wife Amanda Stanton on Dancing with the Stars (which he had to quit due to an ankle injury). Amanda was in tears and in need of a shoulder to cry on. The question on everyone’s mind? Is Josh going to make it through to hometowns?

So I guess Colton decided to change things up with the bachelor party party. A group of the other bachelors stayed at a local hotel to enjoy poolside drinks and strip club dancing. It was a night of discussion, a situation that could potentially put Josh and Amanda in an uncomfortable position. They had a talk and a few conflicts over whether or not Josh was cheating. Meanwhile, Colton decided to do a bit of his own damage control. “That is a complete lie,” he told Josh. “If that was the case I would already be out of here.”

Though the ladies stayed at the hotel and all four finalists sat at the pool watching the guys, things didn’t exactly go smoothly. First things first. “Riley was better than Jared,” an audience member said to a group of girls. When their contestants walked into the ring for the Women of Paradise, Colton took the opportunity to tell some of his pals about his need to have a relationship with the ladies he goes after. Then he started talking to “the girls” about having babies and taking care of him and his family. “The best thing I could do to help a relationship is to make a first impression,” he told the camera. “My biggest goal tonight is to stand out from the crowd, so my fantasy suite date is gonna be a major moment.”

After seeing these two clips, it’s clear that the Bachelor in Paradise premiere would not go down without a dramatic incident or two. Will Josh Murray convince his ex and potential future family member Amanda that she isn’t wrong, or will he unravel in another deposition? The answer is still unclear. Let’s just hope the show stays on the up and up. After all, viewers are still glued to Reality Steve’s Twitter account waiting for the show to deliver their riveting and puzzling twists.
